Saudade
Do Futuro |
In 1941, Orson Welles was asked by the
U.S. State Department to be a good-will ambassador to
Brazil. Plans included his filming of Rio's famous
Carnaval for RKO. It was a fateful trip, one in which
Welles, touched by the Brazilian people and their music,
decided to make a film called The Story of Samba. The
footage of Carnaval, however, upset studio
executives-one characterized it as 'a lot of jigaboos
jumping up and down'-and destroyed Welles' wunderkind
status in Hollywood. This was not the Brazil Hollywood
wanted to see. |
